What Not to do During Your California Child Custody Battle

What Not To Do During Your California Child Custody Battle: Part III

What Not to do During Your California Child Custody Battle

People in Southern California custody battles make choices every day that help determine the outcome of their case. In the final part of this three part series, let’s talk about things you should and shouldn’t do if you are involved in a custody battle for your children.

  1. It’s a sad but true fact that in some parents who would never abuse their children are falsely accused of abuse during a custody battle. To help prevent this, avoid even the appearance of any sexual impropriety with your children. Cover yourself, do not bathe together, etc.
  2. Don’t repeatedly cancel or reschedule your visitation time. If you appear too busy to care for your children, the court may take note.
  3. Don’t represent yourself in custody battle! You need experienced representation, especially if your ex-spouse has hired an attorney. Failing to hire a professional for an important custody battle is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
  4. You must maintain a wholesome and moral environment for your children. Do not let your children be exposed to adult themed music, content, situations, or anything else that is not generally accepted as appropriate for children while they are in your custody.
  5. Do not take illegal recreational drugs.
  6. Jumping into a series of new romantic entanglements is never a good look in custody court. Stability and respectability are key things to consider.
  7. Don’t be more focused on winning your custody case than on actually being a good mother or father to your children! Be a good parent, hire a certified family law specialist who you can trust to handle your case, and let the rest sort itself out.
