The wife of disgraced Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has filed for divorce. Derek Chauvin is infamous for a leaked viral video of an arrest that occurred on May 25, 2020. The brutal footage appears to show him killing George Floyd during an arrest, where Chauvin’s knee pressed into Floyd’s neck as he suffocates over the course of the nine minute video. George Floyd was under arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a nearby establishment to purchase cigarettes.
Mr. & Mrs. Chauvin married on June 12, 2010 in Washington County, Minnesota. She filed her divorce petition on May 30, 2020, five days after the incident.
Kellie Chauvin, 45, is a former radiology technician and won the Mrs. Minneapolis 2018 beauty pageant. She met Derek Chauvin while working at the Hennepin County Medical Center, where he brought in a suspect for a health check.
After the brutal incident went viral, she released the following statement from her Attorney:
This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family. She is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy. She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin. While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.( Source )
The statement, as well as the timing of the filing, would seem to indicate that Ms. Chauvin wishes to distance herself as far as possible from Mr. Chauvin, who is in jail awaiting trial on third-degree murder charges.
