The purpose of child support is to support a child and all of his or her living expenses. Depending on the family, this may be paid by either the father or mother of the children. Child support in California is calculated according to a statewide formula. This formula and the the guidelines are spoke of more in depth in this post. In addition to the amount of child support that is ordered after it is calculated according to the guideline, parents may be required to share additional costs. Some of the costs that parents may be required to share include:
- Child care to allow the parent to work or to get training or schooling for work skills;
- Children’s reasonable health-care expenses;
- Traveling for visitation from 1 parent to another;
- Children’s educational needs; and
- Other special needs.
